Neighbors Helps Students Plan A Brighter Future - Monday, October 22, 2012

Neighbors Federal Credit Union gives students preparing for careers a head start with money management.

Since 2009, ITI and Neighbors have partnered to bring financial education to students enrolled at the college.  Students cover banking accounts and account features as well as money management, budgeting, credit and credit scores in their session.  All workshops are designed to improve the financial capabilities of students who will be entering the workforce when they complete their studies.

Ann Erie, Community Outreach Coordinator with Neighbors FCU, explains "This is everything I wish someone had told me when I started college.  Until you are living on your own, it’s difficult to comprehend all the intricacies involved with money management and it’s also a time when people are definitely interested in learning about credit.  Managing living expenses, school tuition, books and student loans really challenges us to make what we have last longer; I hope to give students the tools necessary to make good financial decisions today so that their tomorrow is financially sound”.

Neighbors provides financial education for each semester’s incoming class though ITI’s Business Instructor, Roman Lantukh.  "Students who come to a technical college are trying to better themselves,” says Roman. "As an instructor is it my job to give them the skills to do just that. That is why financial education is so important. With the help of Neighbors, we can make sure that ITI graduates have the skills necessary to make educated financial decisions that will improve their financial wellbeing.”

Neighbors FCU is a member-owned financial institution serving over 60,000 members in 9 parishes. Chartered as a "not for profit, but for service” credit union since 1954, Neighbors has grown to over $600 million in assets. Anyone who lives, worships, works, or attends school in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, Livingston, and St. Helena parishes is eligible for membership.
