Neighbors, in partnership with LA Jump$tart Coalition, Makes a Homerun at College Goal Sunday! - Sunday, February 24, 2013
In partnership with the statewide College Goal Sunday (CGS) program provided through the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA), Louisiana Jump$tart Coalition brought financial information and resources to students and families who are applying for financial aid for post secondary education.
CGS is an event dedicated to helping college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is the form required for federal and state financial aid, including grants and loans at all colleges in the country. This volunteer program gathers financial aid professionals from colleges and universities to answer questions and provide assistance to families filling out their FAFSA application online.
More than 40 families gathered at the Baton Rouge Community College Campus to learn more about filling out the government paperwork and financial preparation for families of graduates. LA Jump$tart volunteered to assist the program by providing financial information, worksheets, resources and interactive workshops about "general” money matters important to families at the CGS event.
The Louisiana Education Loan Authority (LELA), a LA Jump$tart partner dedicated to helping college-bound students find scholarships and other beneficial financial resources, held a raffle for a $500 educational scholarship! Other LA Jump$tart partners shared interactive workshops for participants themed on "A Game Plan for Your Financial Future” and also provided a "Jump$tart Playbook” which covers information on budgeting, avoiding predatory lending and credit card debt, and how to talk to graduates about money.
Partners provided two 15-minute interactive workshops were presented on: "In the Huddle” – Conducted by Neighbors FCU helped families discuss and plan financial priorities for post-graduation and college life; and "Making the Choice” – 2 and 4 year Transfer Degree Guarantees and how to make sure that credits follow college students in their degree programs when transferring between state colleges.
Established in 2000 as a non-profit organization, Louisiana Jump$tart is a coalition of 40 organizations committed to the financial education of youth and adults in the community. Jump$tart partners provide resources, training and curricula to ensure the financial education of students and adults across the state.
