Neighbors helped EBR Schools kick off their inaugural Back 2 School Expo for the 2012-2013 school year. Held at the new McKinley Middle Magnet school gymnasium, there were booths for everything from free back to school haircuts to information regarding the many resources EBR schools offers students in preparation for the upcoming school year.
Attendees learned about school web sites, registration, attendance policies and transportation routes. Also available was information on school lunch applications with nutrition information, as well as resources for the magnet and gifted and talented programs.
"Events like this are very important tools to get people the information that they need before the start of classes on Aug. 8,” said new Superintendent of Schools Bernard Taylor. The event provided over 500 people information that will help them start the school year off with great success!
Neighbors was on hand to assist parents with financial questions and distribute "Nate The Squirrel” pencils to all the booth visitors. Participants also enjoyed free hotdog dinners, face painting, booth giveaways, free school supplies, wellness information, health screenings and financial education. Entertainment was provided by school district staff and students, including the McKinley Middle and High school cheerleaders and a jazz trio consisting of high school students. April Skipper-Washington, a gifted teacher from Buchanan Elementary School, sang for the crowd.
