If I die today what happens to the money in my bank account? Would the loved ones you want to access it be able to? Are you certain your money would even end up in the right hands?

Survivors who believe they can access an account often find they cannot because of how the account is set up. For instance, a son might believe he holds a joint account with his mom when in reality he only has power of attorney. That power ends at the time of death.

Sometimes an account is frozen after someone’s death even if no family members tell the financial institution. This can happen because the funeral home may notify the Social Security Administration on behalf of the family. That notification can terminate Social Security payments, which typically are direct-deposited.

To learn what steps you need to take to ensure the money you have in the bank will go to your loved ones.
